The Birkmyre Hostel: A Gift to Reverend Dr. John Anderson Graham for the boys of Kalimpong
Birkmyre Hostel, situated at 4 Middleton Row, (4, Sir William James Sarani), is a gift from Sir Archibald Birkmyre to the Reverend Dr. John Anderson Graham for the boys of Kalimpong, it is testimony to the gratitude and appreciation that Sir Archibald Birkmyre had for the selfless and dedicated work of Daddy Graham and his own love for the children of Dr. Graham’s Homes.
The Birkmyre Hostel— continues to play a vital role in supporting the mission and values of Dr. Graham’s Homes.
Two long-awaited important developments have recently taken place: First, the long-pending fire license has been obtained, after having fulfilled all necessary requirements, as per statutory conditions. Second, the legal mutation of the property—from St. Andrew’s Colonial Homes to Dr. Graham’s Homes—has been completed. These are significant steps in strengthening the legal and operational foundation of Birkmyre.
At present, Birkmyre is home to 25 college-going girls. Their continued growth and education are a living testament to the legacy of care and opportunity that this hostel has always stood for. All are assured that accommodation for DGH students will always remain top priority. That commitment is firm and unwavering.
The four guest rooms have been spruced up and available to guests, who wish to spend a few days in Kolkata. Details are available on enquiring at the office.
The hall and the open grounds are also available for usage, and details are also available at the office.
The much loved and fulfilled event – The Christmas Carnival—a joyful tradition that brought together students, alumni, and friends in a celebration of community spirit and togetherness, was reintroduced and continues to draw crowds. Events like these are a lovely reminder that Birkmyre Hostel is more than a building; it is a vibrant part of shared identity.
Birkmyre is now self-sustaining andbeyond covering its own operational needs, it also supports value-added projects in the school at Kalimpong. This marks a new chapter in how Birkmyre gives back.
To cite just a few examples from the past year:
• ₹4.5 lakhs in 2023–24 went toward computers and classroom renovation
• Approximately ₹78,000 was contributed to counselling workshops
• Most recently, ₹5 lakhs has been allocated to support Robotics and AI education for students
Additionally, when school teams travel to Kolkata for football, or basket ball, Birkmyre regularly provides them accommodation.
There are, of course, challenges. Maintaining a century-old heritage building is a continuous and costly responsibility. But the commitment to preserving this historic structure remains steadfast.
And then, there is the legal case—ongoing now for nearly half a century. It continues to drain time, energy, and legal resources, but there remains a determination to see it through, keeping the interests of Birkmyre and DGH at the heart of all efforts.
Looking toward into the future, there is a promising new proposal on the horizon: to bring students on extended sponsorship schemes directly under Birkmyre’s care. The modalities are currently being worked out with DGH UK, and it is hoped that this will strengthen the support that is offered.
The Board of Management of Dr. Graham’s Homes remains the proud and permanent custodian of Birkmyre Hostel. Its purpose, its legacy, and its future is secure under the present Board of Management.
